Our newest stallion Carthouille Philyra V.V. Z, owned both by the Stephex Stables and the breeder, Olympic rider Pilar Lucrecia Cordon, is radiating talent and 5* looks. This fantastic horse was bred with a clear goal in mind: stardom. Carthouille’s parents, sire Carthago Z and dam Gribouille du Lys were both successful showjumping horses, coming from an already excellent breeding background. As Carthouille is only three years old, his future is being avidly planned by his owners. We had the pleasure of discussing the pedigree, as well as the future plans of Carthouille together with Pilar.
Enjoy the interview!
Why did you choose Carthago Z as the sire for Carthouille Philyra V.V. Z?
Pilar Lucrecia Cordon: For the quality of Carthago. I was thinking Gribouille and Carthago would be a good mix. I bought Gribouille when she was 8 years old. We competed together all the way up to the highest level of the sport, as we attended the Olympics in Rio in 2016. I thought Carthago would be the perfect match for her based on their characters, their success in showjumping and their build.
Tell us about the dam, Gribouille du Lys. What was she like?
P: Gribouille was a fighter. She was a small mare with a huge heart. She was really a one of a kind horse; careful, intelligent, eager to perform well, and of course she absolutely loved jumping. She gave her everything to me. Her body was also made for the sport, which is a genetic benefit for breeding future showjumping stars.
Do you have any other offspring from Gribouille?
P: We have but most of the embryos are sold. And for the ones we have the breeding is in process. She does have other offspring also here at Stephex, such as Ollister du Lys who is being ridden by Petronella Andersson at the moment.
What are your future plans for Carthouille?
P: I have a lot of ambitions for Carthouille. This winter we will break him in. Next year we will start with the riding and then jumping. It is important to go about this process carefully and patiently. I don’t want to rush him, but I also want to build structured and well-rounded learning platform for him. Of course I hope for him to follow in his parents’ footsteps. However, to reach that level you need a top quality learning environment, as well as a motivated team around you. Thankfully we have access to both at Stephex, therefore I am looking forward to the future of Carthouille. I am confident that he will give us the best version of himself, as already at three years old he is proving to have an amazing character.
Carthouille indeed is an extremely sweet stallion. With his toys in his stall, this handsome young man was calmly napping and every now and then giving us a quick hello. Pilar stated that he has been a kind horse all throughout his life. They didn’t want to get their hopes too high though, as after a breeding process the character of a stallion may change. However, this was not the case for Carthouille. His calm, yet playful personality stayed, with all doubts flying out of the window.
